A Newborn Puppy With A Cleft Palate Grew Up Feisty With Unusual Ears
Daliso had the odds stacked against him since the day he was born. Yet, he showed a strong will to fight for his life. A kind couple took the chance to save his life, and they never regretted that decision.
Craig Fields, the founder of an animal rescue called New York Bully Crew, got a vet tech call from an emergency hospital for animals. One of the newborn pups had a cleft palate. The breeder wanted to euthanize him because the survival rate of dogs with cleft palate was shallow.
The vet tech asked Craig if he’s willing to take the puppy to his rescue organization. Craig agreed without hesitation because every dog deserved a chance to live. When Craig and Virginie first saw him, he was so tiny that they thought he was a gerbil. Virginie named him Daliso.
Daliso had to be tube-fed until he reached three or four months. Craig and Virginie had not tried this before, but they were not going to give up on Daliso. Virginie worried that he’s not going to make it, but he was a fighter. Daliso seemed very determined to live.
Feeding Tubes Removed
They were so relieved when he passed the stage where he did not have to be tube-fed anymore. They watched him grow bigger, stronger, and feistier. His ears were very noticeable because they had never seen anything like it. The ears made Daliso more adorable in his parents’ eyes.
Craig and Virginie had other dogs in the house. They recognized the fragility of Daliso, and they were very gentle and patient with him. One of the dogs named Earl Grey, who had a cleft lip, had a soft spot for Daliso. They would kiss each other any chance they could get.
Eventually, they officially adopted him. He was the first puppy with cleft palate that they had to care for, and, with that experience, they could be more confident in taking care of other puppies like him.
