Hazel was insecure and afraid of everything and everyone when she was rescued from a filthy puppy mill. She was also heavily pregnant and not yet due for a couple of weeks when she arrived at her foster mom’s house.
Hazel’s foster mama, Janice, shared that she could tell Hazel was trying hard to trust her because she would come out of her kennel a little bit and then run back inside. She said that Hazel’s fear of being hurt by humans was what held her back from completely trusting her.
Janice knew that earning Hazel’s trust had to be on the pup’s terms. So she began sitting next to Hazel with some treats on the side without making direct eye contact or asking her to do anything. All she wanted was for Hazel to know that she is there and meant no harm.

Janice eventually began seeing signs that Hazel was finally feeling more secure. When she saw that the little pup was starting to initiate playtime with her. She brought Hazel a toy and was surprised to know that she did not know what a toy was. But her heart instantly melted when she saw her pick it up for the first time.
Janice shared that Hazel became more relaxed and secure after a week and a half. She recalled how heartwarming it was when Hazel climbed onto her lap for the first time. And used her as a human body pillow because it shows that Hazel trusts her completely.
Hazel eventually gave birth to seven healthy puppies, and the pups were all adopted after ten weeks. Janice shared that her friend who happened to live nearby has decided to keep Hazel, and she is glad that her foster dog finally has a family
