Arlo is a senior dog that has lived most of his life with a tight chain wrapped around his neck. He was kept outside by his owners who would often forget to give him food. Old and weak, they finally let him go, but only to dump him on the side of a road.
For one week, the dog stayed there, never having the courage to wander far. Some people saw him, and they gave him some food or water. No one really went far beyond that. What’s worse is that Arlo got hit by a car. Not only was he sick and hungry, but now, he was severely injured too.
A charity rescue group called Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue got wind of the poor dog’s plight and immediately sent one of their volunteers to retrieve him. When Alex Lovett Woodsum, the animal rescue volunteer given the task, found Arlo, he was a complete mess.
His quite long list of injuries included a broken femur, a back injury, and a damaged tail. Then there was the old scar on his neck from his chain. Dotted across his back were healed wounds from when he was abused by his owners.
The future didn’t look bright for the senior dog. He is estimated to be around 10 to 15 years old. Nevertheless, the rescue group took a chance on him. Arlo spent the next six months at the Lake Area Animal Hospital, where he underwent several surgeries.
Thankfully, his injuries healed nicely.
A new chapter
Alanna and Neal Flaherty, after just losing their own senior dogs at the same time, were not looking to adopt anytime soon. But when they heard about Arlo, they had to meet him. But even before they actually had some face time, they were already convinced that they were going to adopt the poor dog.
They said that he had gone through much, and it felt that it was their duty to give him a good life. And that they did. The couple adopted Arlo and immediately set out to spoil him.
Arlo now lives happily with a very loving family who takes him on many adventures. His favorite is going to the beach.
